How BMI is calculated
BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. In US units it is 703 × weight (lb) ÷ height (in)². A person who is 5′9″ (69 inches) and weighs 170 lb has a BMI of 703 × 170 ÷ 69² = 25.1, just into the overweight range.
Frequently asked questions
What is a healthy BMI?
For adults, 18.5 to 24.9 is considered a healthy weight. 25 to 29.9 is overweight and 30 or higher is obesity. These cut-offs are used by the CDC, WHO and most US doctors and insurers.
Is BMI accurate for athletes?
Not always. BMI can't tell muscle from fat, so muscular people can show as overweight. Waist size, body fat percentage and other measures give a fuller picture.
Is BMI different for men and women?
The adult formula and categories are the same for men and women. For children and teens, BMI is compared with growth charts by age and sex instead.
What BMI is obese?
A BMI of 30 or more. Class 1 obesity is 30–34.9, class 2 is 35–39.9 and class 3 (severe) is 40 or higher.
