Frequently asked questions
Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?
The common practice is to tip on the pre-tax subtotal. Tipping on the total after tax is also fine and just slightly more generous.
What if the bill already includes gratuity?
Some restaurants add an automatic service charge, often for groups of six or more. Check the receipt; if gratuity is included you don't need to tip again unless you want to.
Are tips taxed for the worker?
Yes, but for 2025–2028 workers in tipped occupations can deduct up to $25,000 of tips from federal income tax. Social Security and Medicare still apply.
