Frequently asked questions
When will I see the 2027 increase?
The 3.6% COLA applies to benefits payable for January 2027. Social Security checks paid in January 2027 include it; SSI recipients see it in the payment dated December 31, 2026.
How is the COLA calculated?
It is the increase in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) from the third quarter of the previous year to the third quarter of this year. After the increase, benefits are rounded down to the next lower dime.
Why is my raise smaller than 3.6% after Medicare?
Most people have the Medicare Part B premium deducted from their check. The standard premium is projected to rise from $202.90 to about $209.50 in 2027, which takes back part of the COLA. CMS announces the final 2027 premium in the fall.
When will I get my exact new amount?
SSA posts COLA notices in the my Social Security Message Center in early December and mails letters to people without an online account.
