Frequently asked questions
Who qualifies for the EITC in 2026?
You need earned income, a valid Social Security number, investment income of $12,200 or less and income under the phase-out limit for your family size. Without a qualifying child you must be 25 to 64. Married people generally must file jointly.
Is the EITC refundable?
Yes. If the credit is more than the tax you owe, the IRS pays you the difference as part of your refund.
When do EITC refunds arrive?
By law the IRS cannot issue refunds that include the EITC before mid-February, so most filers who e-file early receive them in late February or early March.
