How GPA is calculated
Multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours, add them up, and divide by the total credits. A 4-credit B+ (3.3) and a 3-credit A (4.0) give (13.2 + 12) ÷ 7 = 3.6. Pass/fail courses earn credit but are left out of the average.
Weighted vs unweighted
Many high schools add 0.5 points for honors and 1.0 for AP or IB courses, so a weighted GPA can go above 4.0. Colleges often recalculate GPA on their own scale, and some schools give an A+ 4.3 instead of 4.0, so check your school's policy.
Frequently asked questions
Is a 3.5 GPA good?
Yes. A 3.5 is roughly an A−/B+ average and is above the national average for both high school and college students.
How do I raise my cumulative GPA?
Each new credit has less effect as your total grows. Enter your current GPA and credits above and try different grades to see how much a semester can move it.
Does an A+ count as 4.3?
At most schools an A+ is 4.0, the same as an A. A few colleges award 4.3; check your registrar's grading policy.
What is a weighted GPA?
A high-school GPA that adds extra points for harder classes, usually +0.5 for honors and +1.0 for AP or IB, so it can exceed 4.0.
